Community Matters

Since 2015, YWCA Hartford Region has been offering timely and important conversations to bring us closer together. Community Matters provides a safe space to learn about important issues impacting the quality of life for your family, neighborhood, and community.

These events include panel discussions, workshops, and the opportunity to come together to better understand each other, promote social justice, equity and raise awareness on important issues impacting your community.

Community Matters: What is Period Poverty?

Period Poverty is a health issue impacting individuals, their families and the community, with 30% of Americans unable to afford monthly period products and hygiene necessities. This often leads to chronic school absenteeism and employment struggles/insecurity. Our March 14 Community Matters event will provide information around this issue and how it plays into gender equity and personal economic stability. We are partnering with Dignity Grows,  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Davis Communications and others to hold a period poverty packing event. Come and help us highlight the importance of this issues and be part of creating change by participating in the packing party.

Community Matters: The Fifty/50 Campaign, Leadership Matters at All Levels

Thank you to all who joined us for our November 15 Community Matters. The conversation was centered around our Fifty/50 Campaign, which works to promote equitable gender and racial diversity on municipal boards and commissions. Our panel will included representatives from our three pilot municipalities of Bloomfield, East Hartford and Hartford. We will discussed the impact individuals can have on quality of life issues in their community, the importance of a diversity of perspectives, how to become actively engaged and make a difference in your community. Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered at our Get Out The Vote Community Matters Canvasing Event last Saturday! We could not have done it without all of you!  We had a great time meeting all of you and walking around the Asylum Hill neighborhood in Hartford to help people understand the importance and power of their vote, register to vote and provide information to residents about the upcoming election in efforts to increase voter turnout! You help us fulfill our mission:  to eliminate racism and empower women through your sacrifice of time and energy. Thank you.

Community Matters conversations are held at YWCA Hartford Region, 135 Broad Street in Hartford and are free to the public.
