Community Matters

Since 2015, YWCA Hartford Region has been offering timely and important conversations to bring us closer together. Community Matters provides a safe space to learn about important issues impacting the quality of life for your family, neighborhood, and community.

These events include panel discussions, workshops, and the opportunity to come together to better understand each other, promote social justice, equity and raise awareness on important issues impacting your community.

Thank you to those that were able to join us for our Community Matters: Ending the Need for Group Placement on August 24. The discussion centered around the need to create alternatives to group placement for our young people that are safe, supportive and allow our youth and young adults to thrive in a family setting whenever possible. This community conversation helped us raise awareness and allowed us to gather insight and perspectives on how Connecticut can do better for our young people.

Thank you to guest speaker, Commissioner Dorantes, who set the tone for the evening and the panel, which included representatives from SUN Scholars, Inc., My People Clinical Services and The Department of Children and Families, who offered their voice and experience on ways to tackle a system ready to be reimagined. Thank you to our moderator, Melinda L. Johnson, who led this meaningful discussion.

Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered at our Get Out The Vote Community Matters Canvasing Event last Saturday! We could not have done it without all of you!  We had a great time meeting all of you and walking around the Asylum Hill neighborhood in Hartford to help people understand the importance and power of their vote, register to vote and provide information to residents about the upcoming election in efforts to increase voter turnout! You help us fulfill our mission:  to eliminate racism and empower women through your sacrifice of time and energy. Thank you.

Community Matters conversations are held at YWCA Hartford Region, 135 Broad Street in Hartford and are free to the public.
