Teacher Assistant

 
Under close supervision of the program manager or head teacher, the assistant teacher will assist in providing a supportive and respectful atmosphere and safe and healthy environment for all children. In this position, you will: help create a supportive and respectful classroom atmosphere, apply appropriate positive discipline techniques in working with the children, assists in the development and implementation of curriculum to meet physical, emotional and intellectual needs of each child and communicate with parents on the children's day. This position requires a minimum of a high school education. Must be physically dexterous and flexible, as well as able to observe enough to report inappropriate situations and behaviors. Some programs require minimum of a CDA and 12 college credits in early childhood education.

Director of Racial Justice and Advocacy

The YWCA is a women's membership movement whose mission is to eliminate racism and empower women.  In the United States, there are YWCA’s in approximately 300 communities serving more than two million members and participants at 1,778 sites.  Worldwide, the YWCA has associations in 122 countries serving 25 million women and their families.  
 
The YWCA of the Hartford Region was founded in 1867 to house and train young women who were moving into the city from surrounding farm areas.  The YWCA continues to work to accomplish its mission by providing quality programs and services that dramatically change the lives of countless women and girls; promoting cross-cultural understanding; and advocating productive and self-sufficient lives for women and their families. Critical programs and services include: childcare, supportive housing, teen leadership, financial literacy, and child abuse prevention
 
Through programs and related public policy advocacy we will be educating others in the community on racial justice issues and playing a leadership role in addressing racism at a systemic level. There will be a formal racial justice component integrated into each of our programmatic areas, and we will be consulted frequently as a source of best practices in translating a commitment to racial justice into effective programming. Our organization’s own programs and practices will reflect the principles of racial and social justice that we champion.
 
In this senior management position, you will be responsible for implementing a multi-faceted strategy to promote the YWCA of the Hartford Region’s commitment to racial justice through organizational development, program activities, and staff and Board of Directors training and development.   You will promote the mission of the YWCA through community outreach and collaboration, and public education and advocacy. 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the implementation and evaluation of specific Strategic Plan goals and objectives relating to racial justice.
  • Assist program directors in developing and implementing specific racial justice content in existing YWCA programs and in creating new YWCA programs and events focused on racial justice.
  • Serve as liaison to work groups relating to racial justice and provide support and direction to staff members and volunteers working on programs, events, and other initiatives focused on racial justice.
  • Coordinate the public policy process for the organization including (a) identifying and setting policy priorities with the Board, (b) monitoring current and emerging relevant public policy issues for Board action, (c) providing regular communications to board and staff regarding critical issues, and (d) building or participating in coalitions to promote a desired outcome.
  • Advocate in the community and with key decision-makers for public policy issues and develop tools to allow others to advocate. 
  • Coordinate public policy and community education initiatives and collaboration with other local organizations and YWCA regional and national committees.  Prepare Op-ed pieces, draft letters, etc. to help mobilize advocacy efforts.
  • Provide support and serve as liaison for the Racial Justice and/or public Policy Committee of the Board.
  • Work with the Governance Committee of the Board of Directors to coordinate and/or deliver ongoing racial justice training for the Board, including the orientation of new Board members.
  • Coordinate the development and presentation of ongoing racial justice training for YWCA staff.
  • Work with senior leaders and managers to assure internal integration and alignment between organizational operations and the commitment to racial justice, i.e. with the Chief Financial Officer  to coordinate the budget for programmatic and community initiatives focused on racial justice and the empowerment of women; with the Development Director to identify and secure funding and other resources for new program initiatives and events relating to racial justice and the empowerment of women; with the Human Resource Director to coordinate and/or deliver ongoing racial justice training for all YWCA employees; with the Manager of Marketing to organize and coordinate public relations and marketing strategies for all racial justice programming and events, and to publicize the YWCA commitment to racial justice.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare written reports and statistics on YWCA programs and community initiatives focused on racial justice.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Experience in design and implementation of multi-faceted approaches to racial justice and public policy advocacy.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and passion for racial justice work in direct alignment with the mission of the YWCA. 
  • Understanding of the needs of diverse populations; ability to work with and relate to diverse groups.
  • Strong understanding of racial justice issues, including institutional and structural racism, white privilege, and the relationship of racism, gender, and class oppression.  
  • Track record of working effectively in coalition and building bridge with community organizations and communities of color. 
  • Track record of program planning and implementation. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences, including the general public, local and national media, and policy makers.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage simultaneous projects and deadlines. 
  • Flexibility regarding work hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Proficient in Word and PowerPoint
                                                                                                                                                                                               
Preferred:                            
  • Three years experience in racial justice and/or community organizing work. 
  • Masters degree in social work, social sciences, or related field.
  • Experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Experience in training design, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Fluent in Spanish.
  • Knowledge of/experience in the Greater Hartford Region.
