YWLC is a free after-school program for young women between the ages of 12 – 18 years, grades 7 – 12. YWLC aims to empower young women to identify and to achieve educational and personal goals. Young women focus on increasing financial capability, career planning and exploration and personal growth.
Key objectives for young women in YWLC are to:
- Be introduced to a non-traditional athletic activity
- Become aware of and become actively involved in a community awareness campaign
- Learn to communicate effectively as an individual and member of a group
- Set personal goals (e.g. develop academic and career goals) and develop enhanced self-worth; and
- Gain knowledge necessary to make positive and healthy choices (i.e. regarding wellness, substance use, financial literacy, sexual activity and personal safety)
The program runs throughout the academic school year at the following schools: Metropolitan Learning Center in Bloomfield, High School, Inc in Hartford; Windsor High School, Sage Park Middle School in Windsor, East Hartford High School and East Hartford Middle School.
The following is a sample of scheduled activities:
- Educational Workshops (topics: nutrition/fitness, anatomy/physiology, sexual decision making, money management, how to network and how to find a job, leadership, public speaking, college preparation, etc.)
- A community project
- College tours
- A graduation celebration
YWCA provides a free snack and a bus token to participants of the program. Graduates of YWLC receive a certificate of achievement and have the opportunity to remain involved with the program as volunteers.
